Fireflies Lose to GreenJackets, Fall to 5-13 After All-Star Break
AUGUSTA, GA – The Fireflies lost the series finale to the GreenJackets on Sunday night, 3-0, at Lake Olmstead Stadium. Kevin Canelon was superb once again. The lefty logged seven innings on the bump and allowed just two earned runs.
Both pitchers rolled early. After allowing a run in the first frame, Canelon (L, 5-7) retired 11 batters in a row. His counterpart Jake McCasland (W, 2-4) was just a tad bit better. Augusta’s (12-6, 48-40) right-handed starter pitched six shutout innings and struck out six Columbia (5-13, 41-47) batters.
The GreenJackets extended their 1-0 lead in the fifth inning. Seth Harrison doubled and moved to third base after a sacrifice bunt. Johneshwy Fargas knocked Harrison in with a base hit.
The home team added an insurance run in the eighth. Augusta’s pitching rode the offense’s momentum and retired the final ten Fireflies’ hitters.
Columbia’s bright spot over the weekend was outfielder Kevin Kaczmarski. The Evansville product picked up a pair of doubles on Sunday. Kaczmarski finished 8-for-13 in the series with five runs, a home run, three two-baggers and two RBIs.
Following the off-day on Monday, the Fireflies return home Tuesday at Spirit Communications Park to host the Delmarva Shorebirds (Baltimore Orioles) for the first time this year. Columbia righty Bryce Beeler (1-0, 0.68) opposes Delmarva southpaw Brian Gonzalez (5-5, 2,92). First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m.
