Retailers, Residents Gearing Up for Tax-Free Weekend

Back to School Tax FreeCOLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) – South Carolina’s Sales Tax Holiday weekend is less than one month away which means back-to-school shoppers and penny punchers will likely flock to retailers to get their hands on everything from pencils to personal computers.

During the 17th annual version of the tax free holiday which runs from Friday, August 5 through Sunday, August 7, South Carolina shoppers are expected to save an estimated $2.25 million, according to the Board of Economic Advisors.

Some of the tax free items exempt from the 6% state sales tax and any applicable local sales taxes include paper, notebooks, pens and pencils, book bags, computers, clothing, shoes, bed linens, and bath towels

Jewelry, cosmetics, eyewear, furniture, and items placed on layaway are not exempt from sales taxes.
