Sumter Police: 5 Wanted for Assault

SUMTER, S.C. (WOLO) – Authorities with the Sumter Police Department say warrants have been issued for five men that were allegedly involved in a assault on a victim earlier this month.

The assault occurred  July 13 on Marilyn Avenue, police say.

A sixth man is reportedly involved in the assault and authorities are working to identify the suspect.

The suspects each face a charge of third degree assault and battery by mob, police say.

The five men are also wanted for questioning in the shooting death of 28-year-old Ante Witherspoon.

Witherspoon was shot to death on July 15 near his family’s home on Dilbert Street.

A suspect in the case, 28-year-old Bernie Peoples, turned himself in to authorities on July 16 and remains at the Sumter-Lee Regional Detention Center on a murder charge.
