UNION COUNTY, NC (WCCB) — Union County Sheriff’s Deputies have charged a 27-year-old Monroe man with Felony Child Abuse involving his 8-week-old son.

Deputies say Ronald Roberts was arrested after his 8-week-old baby was admitted to Novant Health Presbyterian with possible head trauma resulting from possible child abuse. Officials say the baby remains in critical condition.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police initially responded to the hospital but contacted the Union County Sheriff’s Office when they discovered the incident had occurred in Union County.

Detectives say Roberts and his fiancée live on Baucom and Son Road in Monroe with their two children. After speaking with family members and medical staff on the baby’s condition, charges were filed against Roberts.

The case is being investigated by Union County Sheriff’s detectives and Union County DSS case workers.

Roberts will have his first appearance in Union County District Court Tuesday, August 2nd.

Sheriff Eddie Cathey applauded the outstanding work of detectives handling this investigation saying, “We investigate every case with the same degree of intensity. But when you talk about a case of child abuse, that takes it to a different level. We are all praying for this little boy.”
