Augusta Tops Fireflies, 2-0

fireflies.jpgAUGUSTA, GA (Fireflies) – The crafty lefty was solid on the hill on Wednesday night, but Kevin Canelon’s performance could not lift the Fireflies to victory. Augusta downed Columbia, 2-0, at Lake Olmstead Stadium. Canelon recorded his 15th quality start of the season, lasting six innings and only surrendering two runs.

Canelon (L, 5-9) retired the first two hitters in the first frame, but then allowed a single to Dillon Dobson. The next batter, Matt Winn, homered over the left-field wall to put the home team in front, 2-0.

Columbia (13-25, 49-59) brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth, but Ryan Koziol (S, 4) forced Dash Winningham to ground out to first base to end the game. Augusta’s (24-15, 60-49) starter Domenic Mazza (W, 4-2) picked up his second victory against the Fireflies this season.

Columbia continues its road trip to Rome, Georgia. The Fireflies will complete five games at State Mutual Stadiumin four days. Columbia’s matchup with Rome from July 18 was postponed due to rain and will resume on Thursdaystarting at 5:00 p.m. While the game will be in Rome, the Fireflies will be the home team when the scoreless game restarts in the second inning. Thursday’s originally scheduled 7:00 p.m. contest between the Braves and Fireflies begins approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the nine-inning suspended game. Game two will be seven innings and Columbia will be the road team.

The two pitchers who started the game on July 18 – right-hander Gaby Almonte (2-3, 5.40) for Columbia and righty Patrick Weigel (7-4, 2.77) for Rome – are expected on the mound when the game restarts.

Then the Fireflies send righty Andrew Church (4-0, 1.02) to the rubber to face southpaw Oriel Caicedo (2-4, 5.43) in the night cap.
