LEXINGTON, S.C. (WOLO) — The Lexington County Coroner has confirmed the name of the 14-year-old River Bluff High School student who collapsed on the field during Wednesday night’s football practice.

According to the Lexington County Coroner, Lewis N. Simpkins was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Lexington Medical Center Emergency Department.

An autopsy will be performed Thursday to determine the cause of death.

According to Lexington School District One officials, the team started practice at 5:00 p.m. Wednesday.  The team had practiced outside for about two hours and fifteen minutes when Simpkins collapsed.

Officials want to assure that during that practice, the team took regular water breaks every 15 to 20 minutes.

Officials say the student received medical treatment at the school before being taken to the hospital.

Different teams from River Bluff High School tweed out their condolences, in light of the news.
