Richland County, S.C. (WOLO) —The wish of a Richland County 9 year old suffering from a rare blood disease has been granted.
Haylee Lykes will soon take the trip of a life time to the most magical place on Earth.
The 4th grader suffers from a rare sickle cell disease with symptoms that prevent her from participating in normal physical activities.
Whitney Kinsey-Lykes, Haylee’s mother explains, “It causes pain. I mean she’s prone to infections, different kinds of illnesses, she burns fevers out of the blue, she could be fine right now and then 5 seconds later she could have a 105 fever.”
Haylee has been in and out of the hospital since she was diagnosed with the disease, when she was two weeks old.
She tells ABC Columbia, “I’ve been in the hospital a lot of times. I don’t like it cause I don’t get to play games and stuff.”
Haylee’s mother works part time at RCSD, but says the disease and mounting medical bills have taken an emotional and financial toll on the entire family.
Now they’re all looking forward to a trip to the most magical place on earth, thanks to the Make a Wish Foundation.
“I’ve been wanting to go to animal kingdom and disney world for a long time,”says Haylee.
Her mother adds, “Let her get a way for a chance and not worry about hospitals or getting an iv or getting a needle prick being sick and in pain just let he be a child.”
