Clemson’s Patricia Mamona Places Sixth at Rio Olympics

Patricia MamonaCLEMSON, S.C. (CAC) — Former Clemson athlete Patricia Mamona finished sixth in the women’s triple jump at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Mamona set a personal best and broke her own Portuguese national record with a  leap of 14.65 meters (48-0.75) on her fifth attempt Sunday. Colombia’s Caterine Ibarguen won the gold medal.

Mamona, a two-time NCAA champion in the event for the Tigers and 2011 Clemson graduate, put together an outstanding series of jumps. She did not have a foul in six attempts as well. A close competition throughout the evening, the 2016 European champion was just 10 centimeters shy of earning a bronze medal Sunday.

Clemson’s next action in the Rio Olympics will be Tuesday, when Joana Costa opens in the pole vault and Brianna Rollins competes in the 100 hurdles.
