Lexington County, S.C. (WOLO) — Students are gearing up for another year in the classroom.

On Monday, the halls of White Knoll Elementary were crowded with students, parents, and teachers kicking off a new school year.

Parents and students had mixed emotions about school being back in session.

As for administrators, Principal Nicole Mitchell says ushering in a new year means extra effort for the educators.

She tells ABC Columbia, “Prepping for the first day of school starts in the middle of the year, making certain that all of the working parts work together. We’ll meet this afternoon to see what we need to tweak to enhance the first day next year.”

This year, South Carolina students will be contending with a new 10 point grading scale.  The new scoring system is as follows: A = >90%, B= >80%, C= >70%, passing = >60%
