17-Year-Old Charged With Murder, One Still Sought In Fatal Shooting
RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. (WOLO) – A teen is behind bars in connection with the fatal shooting of a man on August 5 in the 100 block of Wood Court.
Jermaine Dupri Davis was taken into custody on August 10 and is charged with murder and carjacking.
Authorities say that on August 2, Davis and an acquaintance went to the Stop & Go Corner Store located at 3536 Kay Street looking to purchase Black and Mild cigars.
Since they were underage, the pair asked Zaire Janyi Franklin to purchase them.
Franklin, 25, who was already heading in the store, agreed to purchase the cigars, but kept the change police say.
According to officials, a verbal altercation ensued over the one dollar change and both parties went their separate ways.
The next day, Davis and the acquaintance spotted Franklin leaving the same store and carjacked his 2000 GMC Jimmy SUV at gunpoint.
A few day later on August 5, deputies responded to a shots fired call and found Franklin, lying on the ground unresponsive.
He was pronounced dead on the scene.
Richland County Coroner Gary Watts said Franklin died as a result of a gunshot wound to the upper torso.
The investigation is ongoing and additional arrests could be forthcoming.
Davis is being charged as an adult and is currently being held at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.
