CALHOUN COUNTY, S.C. (WOLO) – A Columbia man is behind bars charged in connection with the fatal shooting of a 79-year-old man on Thursday.

Authorities with the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office say 56-year-old Edward Britt, Jr. was arrested and charged with murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime and possession of a weapon by a person convicted of a felony.

Britt is accused of shooting 79-year-old Franklin Parker of St. Matthews at his home several times in the upper body during an argument.

Authorities say they received a tip that led to the discovery of Parker’s body inside the home and later determined that Britt was a suspect.

Britt admitted to his involvement in shooting Parker, police say.

“This was a senseless act of violence, and I’m pleased that we were able to bring closure to this case quickly,” Calhoun County Sheriff Thomas Summers said.

Britt is being held at the Orangeburg-Calhoun Regional Detention Center and is waiting a bond hearing.
