Safety Checkpoint Leads to Double Arrest

Newberry, S.C. (WOLO) — The Newberry County Sherrif’s Office has arrested to men after a checkpoint leads to  a drug arrest.

According to authorities, South Carolina Highway patrol was conducting safety checkpoints along Highway 219 in the Hillbrook Lane area when they stopped a car with a strong odor of marijuana coming from the car. Police say the suspects inside that car Rishawn Harmon and Willie Nance attempted to flee the scene on foot but were caught a short time later.

Authorities say further investigation uncovered more than 3 hundred dollars in cash, 2 grams of crack cocaine, a small amount of marijuana. Inside the car police say they found at least two hydrocodone pills , a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia.

Both men have been arrested and are being housed at the Newberry detention center.
