| NEWS AND NOTES
• Today marks the second all-time meeting between the Wolves and Panthers, with Newberry earning a convincing 55-7 win in 2005.
• Newberry’s 48-point margin of victory in the previous meeting represented its biggest win since a 56-0 victory over Guilford in Newberry in 1957.
• Newberry is playing a team called the Panthers for the second consecutive week. It’s the first time Newberry has played two schools with the same nickname in consecutive games since wins over Edward Waters and Morehead State to begin the 2005 season.
• Sophomore wide receiver Markell Castle’s one-handed, 25-yard catch late in the second quarter was featured on SportsCenter as the No. 2 play on Top 10.
• Raleigh Yeldell was third in school history with 447 passing yards against Florida Tech. He ranks fourth in Division II in passing yardage and third with 496 yards of total offense.
• Yeldell’s 37 completions on the season are ranked second in Division II, five behind Dmitri Morales of Upper Iowa.
• Castle’s 181 receiving yards were good for seventh nationally.
• Cole Watson had two receiving touchdowns on Saturday, tying him for 11th in Division II. Ten players from around the nation had three receiving scores on opening weekend.
• Newberry ranked 10th nationally with 550 yards of total offense.
• Virginia Union is ranked third in the nation with three fumbles recovered and had five different defensive players force fumbles in Saturday’s 14-12 loss to LIU Post.
• The Panthers earned a playoff berth last season for the first time since 1991, finishing the regular season 8-2 before falling to second-seeded Slippery Rock 40-21 in the opening round.
• Virginia Union defeated fellow South Atlantic Conference foe Brevard 35-21 in the 2015 season opener, then were stopped on a fourth and goal in the final two minutes of a 13-9 loss at former SAC member and current Division I institution Gardner-Webb.
• Virginia Union was one of 24 teams that did not allow a sack on the season’s opening weekend. |
