COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO/PRESS RELEASE) – With the approach of Hurricane Matthew, residents along the South Carolina Coast and surrounding areas of the Low Country are under an evacuation order issued by Governor Haley on October 4. Customers using propane gas in their homes or businesses should take the following steps before evacuation:

  1. Before you leave your property, turn off the main gas supply valve on your propane tank, if it is safe to do so. To close the valve, turn it to the right (clockwise).
  2. Turn off the gas supply valves located near individual indoor appliances. Consult your propane retailer to make sure you know where the actual valves are located and how to shut them off.
  3. If at all possible, contact your propane supplier and let them know that you are evacuating your property. This will alert them that there is a need for service when it is safe to return to your home or business.

If you suspect any of your propane appliances or equipment have been under water, or they have been damaged, or you have turned off your gas supply

  • DO schedule a time for a qualified service technician to perform a complete inspection of your propane system. The technician can also perform a leak test on the system and re-light your pilot lights.
  • DO NOT use or operate propane appliances, equipment, or turn on the gas supply until your system has been inspected by a qualified service technician.

More information on what to do before, during and after a Hurricane/Flood can be found at the South Carolina Propane Gas Association (SCPGA) website – www.scpropane.com or by calling the SCPGA office at 803-865-2284.
