CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) — A pre-trial hearing is being held Tuesday for former North Charleston Police officer Michael Slager.
Slager is charged with murder in the shooting death of 50-year-old Walter Scott. The shooting happened April 4, 2015, during a traffic stop on North Charleston.
Attorneys are expected to argue over a five-motion filing that includes a motion centered on the video taken by Feidin Santana during the incident.
Santana’s video showed the final moments between an interaction between Slager and 50-year-old Scott that left the latter dead and the former charged with murder.
The filing also includes interviews conducted by State Law Enforcement Division agents who investigated the fatal shooting, issues with Solicitor Scarlett Wilson’s involvement in the case, and access to background information on the jury pool that will report to court on Oct. 31.
The jury in Slager’s murder trial could be seated in early November, and arguments are expected to take two weeks. That means the jury could deliver a verdict before Thanksiving.
Slager faces a possible life sentence if he’s convicted.
He’s also facing civil rights charges in federal prison. That trial is expected to start sometime next year.
