Haley Appoints Hartley Powell as New SCDOR Director

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) – During a news conference Monday morning Governor Nikki Haley appointed a new director to the South Carolina Department of Revenue.

Hartley Powell will assume the role on January 2.

Rick Reames, III is the current SCDRO director.

The 11 a.m. news conference was held at the State House

Powell has been with KPMG since 2001. The Columbia native worked in the Department of Commerce from 1988 through 1998. Powell also has worked as a corporate lawyer.

The Senate must confirm him.

Haley says a new direction for the agency will include working closer with counties.

Earlier this year, Richland County sued the agency over its threat to withhold local sales taxes. A judge ordered Revenue to release the money but said the agency can pursue its allegations that county officials were misusing it.

Haley also discussed her meeting with President-Elect Trump and the upcoming statewide Day of Prayer.

ABC Columbia’s Gabrielle Franklin was at the announcement.
