Deputies: Man Charged with Cruelty After Child Hit with Ruler

RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. (WOLO) – Deputies say a 50-year-old man is behind bars and is charged with cruelty to children after striking a child with a wooden ruler.

Allen Smith turned himself in to Richland County Sheriff’s Department investigators following an investigation that began on October 20th of alleged abuse by the victim’s mother to her nine year old son.

On October 19th, Smith assaulted the victim with a  ruler causing bruises to the lower body and right forearm of the victim, deputies say.

The incident allegedly took place at the A&A Community Learning Center located in the 100 block of South Highland Forest Drive.

Deputies say the victim attend school there.

Smith is charged with cruelty to children.

He is being held at Alvin S. Glenn detention Center.
