Jets waive RB C.J. Spiller
Running back C.J. Spiller, a curious addition last month, is no more.
On Tuesday, the New York Jets waived the former Pro Bowl player turned journeyman. Spiller played in only four games (31 offensive snaps), producing meager numbers — three carries for 9 yards and one catch for 7 yards.
Spiller actually got on the field for the second play in Monday night’s 41-10 loss to the Indianapolis Colts; he was used in a two-back set with Bilal Powell. Offensive coordinator Chan Gailey tried that personnel grouping a few times, but eventually gave up when it produced no results.
The Jets wound up using Spiller as a kickoff returner during his brief stay (five returns), even though coach Todd Bowles said upon signing him there were no plans to deploy him in that role. They re-signed Jeremy Ross to return punts and kickoffs and he, too, was released on Tuesday. Presumably, rookie Jalin Marshall is ready to return from a concussion.
Spiller arrived under weird circumstances. The Jets claimed running back Knile Davis on waivers from the Green Bay Packers, but they dumped him a few hours later when Spiller said he’d agree to a contract. In retrospect, it was a lot of trouble for a bottom-of-the-roster player.
The Jets have two openings on their 53-man roster.
