Betts Named SIAC Player Of The Week

benedict-12-17ATLANTA – Destiny Betts (Benedict) was named the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Women’s Basketball Player of the Week and Jalynn Estrada (Tuskegee) was selected as the Newcomer of the Week, announced on Dec. 20 by the league office.

Betts was phenomenal last week for Benedict (6-7 overall, 2-1 SIAC) where she averaged 21 points and 20.5 rebounds in a pair of games. In a 93-84 loss to Saint Leo, Betts scored a career-high 30 points and grabbed a career-high 32 rebounds, the most by any NCAA player this season, men and women in all divisions. It is also tied for fifth-most rebounds in a single game in NCAA Division II women’s basketball history. She also finished with three assists, a block and a steal. Against Lynn, the 6-2 senior forward from Halifax, Va., scored 12 points and finished with nine rebounds. Betts also recorded a pair of steals and a block. Benedict will visit Miles on Jan. 2 for a conference game at 5:30 p.m.

Estrada, a 5-5 guard from Skokie, Ill., scored a career-high 11 points in a 74-72 overtime victory to help Tuskegee (5-5, 1-0) defeat Clark Atlanta last week. The freshman connected on a pair of three-pointers in the final 29 seconds, including one with 0.2 seconds remaining to send the game to overtime. Estrada added a rebound, assist, and steal in the win. Tuskegee returns back to action on Jan. 2 and will host Claflin for a SIAC matchup at 1 p.m
