Newberry signs initial crop of 44 players

NEWBERRY (Newberry SID)  Newberry head coach Todd Knight and his staff released an initial crop of 44 signees to mark Wednesday’s National Signing Day, including four transfer students, 39 who played at South Carolina high schools, and one signee from neighboring Georgia.

The Wolves’ signing class is loaded with Midlands talent, headlined by Gilbert running back Catriez Cook and Dutch Fork teammates Reese Nichols and Bobby Irby. In all, 10 signees are coming off of state championship seasons. Eleven of the newest Wolves made the North-South All-Star game, one appeared in the Shrine Bowl, and four more played in the Border Bowl. Six players were named Region Player of the Year, while Maleke Davis of Laurence Manning Academy was named the SCISA Defensive Player of the Year.

Additional members of this year’s recruiting class may come in the days ahead. All of Newberry’s signees, along with their headshots and bios, can be found at Signing Day Central. Fans can also search the hashtag #NBYFamily17 on Twitter to see graphics of each signee and send congratulatory messages to the newest Wolves.
