Modjeska Simkins

In today’s Black History Moment we celebrate Modjeska Simkins.

Originally from Columbia, South Carolina, Simkins started as a teacher and went on to become the first black person to work full time in public health in our state.

Simkins also founded the NAACP State Conference.

And, perhaps most historically, Simkins wrote the argument for the lawsuit that was used to end school segregation in Clarendon county schools.
That argument was then later used as the blue print argument for ending segregation in other states across the country.
