COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) – Columbia based non-profit Artists for Africa brings the arts to children in some of the world’s most impoverished areas.
Founding board member Robbie Butt says the organization’s annual Postcard Art Event raises crucial money to keep this program in place. The event takes place Wednesday, February 15 at Embassy Suites in Columbia. The evening will feature a cocktail hour, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., featuring live music by Dr. Jason Carpenter on keyboard. At 7 p.m. the gallery will open, for guests to admire artwork donated by artists from across the country. The 4″ x 6″ postcard sized canvases are displayed anonymously with the artist’s signature on the back. Every piece is $65. ABC Columbia News anchor Alicia Barnes will be emceeing the event.
Tickets are $15. They can be purchased here.
More information about Artists for Africa:
Columbia native Cooper Rust founded Artists For Africa in 2010. After volunteering as a dance instructor for Anno’s Africa in the Kibera slum, Rust relocated to Nairobi to continue her work with the children of Kenya. In addition to her dance instruction, Rust works tirelessly with Dance Centre Kenya to produce performances of classical ballet such as The Nutcracker and Giselle as well as modern and traditional African dance.
All proceeds from Artists For Africa’s Postcard Art Event go to directly support free arts education programs for orphaned and impoverished children in Kenya. Artists For Africa, in association with Anno’s Africa (UK), One Fine Day (GER) and Dance Centre Kenya, offers dance, music, creative writing, theater and gymnastics programs to children living in the most destitute circumstances in the slums of Kenya.
