In today’s Black History Moment we celebrate Althea Gibson.
Gibson was an internationally known tennis player. She won Wimbledon and numerous U.S. championships even though she was not allowed to practice publicly due to her skin color. Instead, Gibson honed her skills in a backyard.
The athlete was appointed Sports Commissioner of New York in 1975.
All month long we celebrate native black South Carolinian’s that had a profound impact on the state…and the world.
