Black History Moment
Esau Jenkins
Today we celebrate Esau Jenkins.
The John’s Island native was a business man and civil rights leader.
Jenkins founded the Progressive Club, an organization encouraging blacks to register to vote.
Jenkins also organized the Citizen’s Committee of Charleston, focusing on economic and political empowerment of blacks; his motto ” hate is expensive, love is progress.”
All month long we celebrate black South Carolinians who have had a profound impact on the state and the world
