State Legislators React to Affordable Care Act Replacement Plan

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO)- Members of South Carolina’s house are sharing their thoughts on GOP legislation that could replace President Obama’s healthcare act. Some members of South Carolina’s House say the new plan would be an upgrade from  Obamacare.

“It’s hopeful,” began Dorchester Republican . Right now the Affordable Care Act is devastating to the vast amount of Americans, small businesses specifically, with the mandates that were imposed on the Affordable Care Act, we have literally put some small businesses out of business.”
Other members say the new legislation may be good for businessmen but not for other patients who may need the assistance.
“I think it’s going to cause a lot of people to lose their health insurance coverage. I don’t think it’s a good idea at all. I’ve heard some pundits describe the new plan as basically Obamacare Lite. That’s essentially what it is however, it has an adverse affect on low-income, at-risk populations,” said Williamsburg Democrat Cezar McKnight.
Republican U.S. Senator Rand Paul likened the new plan to Obamacare in a tweet but some South Carolina GOP members say it may be to early to for that comparison.

“As we’ve seen with Obamacare the devil is in the details, that’s how it rolls down on to the people that it places the burdens on, the businesses and things of that nature, so to say it is or isn’t like Obamacare or it’s Obama Lite, I really can’t say until we see how it’s going to impact,” said York Republican Tommy Pope.
