USC’s Figger Named New Austin Peay Head Coach

Gamecocks associate head coach and recruiting coordinator Matt Figger will be officially introduced as the new head coach at Austin Peay State University on Thursday.

The Governors new leader had spent the past 10 years working on the same staff as USC head coach Frank Martin, coming to Columbia when Martin arrived from Kansas State in 2012. The move was rumored as of Wednesday, March 29, while Carolina was still in the NCAA Tournament, traveling to their first Final Four in Arizona.

Figger helped lead the Gamecocks to record-setting seasons, breaking the program mark for wins in a season with 25 in 2015-16, before topping that mark with 26 wins this campaign.

APSU will be Figger’s first Division I head coaching job after serving on staffs at USC, KSU, Arkansas, and South Alabama. He served as a head coach at three junior colleges, making it to four NJCAA National Tournaments. He becomes Austin Peay’s 12th head coach in program history, replacing the retiring Dave Loos, who spent 27 seasons in charge of the program.
