A’ja Wilson’s High School Coach Describes Her Journey to the Championship

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO)- If you watched the women’s national championship, you know the name A’ja Wilson but one man knew she would be a star long before she was in the national spotlight.

“I just knew all along, she always proved her critics wrong and she’s continued doing that today,” said Coach John O’Cain of Heathwood Hall.

O’Cain has known NCAA Women’s Basketball Champion and MVP A’ja Wilson since she was a 5th grader in his P.E. class at Heathwood Hall. He coached A’ja throughout her career at Heathwood, coaching her in a 2014 state championship and standing by her as she made her decision to play for the Gamecocks.

“It’s just been great to watch her mature and keep that same focus on, that successful drive and mentality that she has,” said O’Cain.
O’Cain says he’s proud of the way she played Sunday night. “She ruled the glass on the rebounds, I think she had like 19 boards. That just kind of shows that she’s got more than just an offensive game. She’ll do what it takes what it takes for the team to win,” said O’Cain.

Although he no longer coaches basketball at Heathwood, O’Cain still supports A’ja. O’Cain is not the only one, the entire school is standing behind her. Check out their congratulation video here: https://www.facebook.com/HeathwoodHall/videos/vb.100119540079252/1310957548995439/?type=2&theater
