SCDPS Host Memorial Service to Remember 2016 Highway Victims

COLUMBIA,SC (WOLO)- The South Carolina Department of Public Safety held a memorial service to remember the more than 1,000 victims who lost their life on state roadways in 2016.

During the event held on Saturday, victim family members gathered at Bible Way Church of Atlas Road to remember the 1,017 motorist that died as a result of a traffic collision.

Family members stood up when their loved ones name came across the screen.

“We as law enforcement and first responders want to come and show our support for those families,” SC Highway Patrol, Lt. Kelly Hughes said. “We try to stay in touch with a lot of these families as their going through their grieving process, and we wont them to know that we care and that they are not forgotten.”

The memorial service has been held annually since 1988 to remember residents and visitors who lost their lives on South Carolina highways.
