Bulldogs Add More Depth in Backcourt with Signing of Harewood

ORANGEBURG, SC (SCSU) — South Carolina State head men’s basketball coach Murray Garvin has announced the signing of guard Levar Harewood to the Bulldog roster for the upcoming 2017-18 season.

“We are thrilled about the addition of Lavar to our program,” said Garvin. “He possesses the attributes in a guard that we haven’t had in a very long time here at SC State. His skill set/toughness will allow us to do a lot of different things with our lineup.”

Garvin also stated, “Lavar comes highly recommended by a variety of coaches and scouts in college recruiting.  I’d like to give credit to my assistant coaches again for finding talented student-athletes that can help move our program to a championship level. We can’t wait to coach Lavar in a Bulldog uniform.”

Harewood (6-3, 200 guard), from Brownsville, NY, played his prep career at Brooks School in North Andover, Massachusetts where he led the team in scoring with 19.7 points and 1.2 assist, while shooting 40% from behind the arc.  During his junior and senior seasons, he led his team to back-to-back Independent School League (ISL) state championship finals.

After his prep career ended, he signed with the University of Maine where he spent one season, averaging 5.1 points per game for the Black Bears before transferring to Cloud County Community College in Concordia, Kansas. While at UM, he had a career-night as a freshman, tossing in four straight 3-pointers against Holy Cross College.

Last season, he led Cloud County to a 20-11 overall record while averaging 10.3 points per outing.

“We are all very excited for Lavar as he continues his basketball career at SC State,” said Cloud County JC head coach Chad Eshbaugh. “Coach Garvin is a great coach and person who will be a tremendous mentor. He has the ability to score the ball from all three levels and is a strong rebounder from the guard spot.  After battling through a season injury, he displayed great physical and mental toughness to become a great leader and contributor to our team. I am confident that Lavar can make an immediate impact on the court for the Bulldogs next season.”
