AmeriCorps Members Leave Lasting Mark on Palmetto Trail

WEDGEFIELD, S.C. (WOLO) – When finished, the Palmetto Trail will be one of just 16 cross-state trails in the nation, stretching from the Upstate to the Lowcountry.
The Palmetto Conservation Foundation is leading completion efforts. Last summer, they launched the Palmetto Conservation Corps – an AmeriCorps program.
AmeriCorps members apply, and then select a term, location and subject area of service. The idea is to employ Americans, who want to give back to their communities.
PCF created its AmeriCorps program to ensure our state always has a continuous, ten member team, working on completing conservation projects.
Filling in the holes along the Palmetto Trail is one such project. Currently, the team is working along the Wateree Passage in Manchester State Forest. They’re connecting one end of the trail with another, about a half mile away, 20 feet above wetland. Old railroad trestles are serving as the foundation for the new portion of trail.
“It was a really good opportunity for me to get out of home state and explore the country and figure out what I wanted to do with my life,” Washington State resident Landon Donaca, who’s on the PCC team, said.
