“I didn’t think I was going to live,” Prosperity Resident Trapped in Home During Storm Says

NEWBERRY COUNTY, SC (WOLO)- At least 12 homes have been damaged by a powerful storm that ripped through the Cy Schumpert Road area in Prosperity.

Residents were in disbelief when they saw the aftermath.

“You could hear the roof and the board literally getting ripped off,” Rebecca Ammons said.

“The house was shaking and I thought me and her were going to die,” Kelly Whight said.

A path of destruction is now left behind in this prosperity community. Neighbors homes are so damaged from the possible tornado that authorities told them to pack up and leave.

The strong winds packed a powerful punch throughout the Cy Schumpert Road area.

It was a nightmare for residents who were home at the time. Whight tells ABC Columbia News that she and her roommate covered each other in the hall way as their roof ripped off and heard windows burst.

“It was the scariest moment of my life,” Whight said. “I didn’t think I was going to live.”

This is the fourth tornado residents say they’ve experienced and the winds were so powerful that it knocked down a cinder block wall from their garage.

“We’ve been through this,”Patti Suber said. “You don’t have time to be scared. It happens so fast you just react.”

Johnny Hair has been living at his Prosperity home for 49 years. On Wednesday he came home to a tree on top of his roof and crushing one of his cars.

“Those trees should’ve been cut really,” Hair said.

Residents say the property damage is nothing compared to their life.

“I’ve never scene nothing like it and I hope I never do again,” Whight said.

Newberry county Sheriff’s Department says their were no reported injures. Officials will be back on Cy Schumpert Road Thursday to begin clean up.
