More Travelers Expected to Visit S.C. This Memorial Day

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO)- According to AAA, 565,000 South Carolinians will travel at least 50 miles away from home, making this the busiest Memorial Day travel period in our state since 2005. While some residents are leaving the state for the holidays, visitors will be making their way in.

South Carolina’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism projects more guests will visit the Palmetto State this year than last year. Though they cannot pinpoint an exact number yet, they expect to host more guests due to factors like lower gas prices and nice weather.
AAA of the Carolinas list Myrtle Beach and Greenville as two of the top destinations in the Carolinas.

Despite being away from home on Memorial Day, tourists say they always find a way to commemorate the holiday in our state.

“There’s usually local events and different things. In years past, we’ve gone down to the beach and they’ve had Memorial Day parades through town and different events. So they’ll be things in your community you can certainly tag into  and recognize real life people, not just the calendar holiday, but real life people who have given and shared,” said Michael Coone of North Carolina.
