Sheriff: Deputy used service weapon to commit suicide
RICHLAND COUNTY, SC (WOLO) – Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott said the deputy who took his own life over the weekend was a “fine young man.”
Sheriff Lott said Deputy Derek Fish used his service weapon to commit suicide on July 28 while in his patrol car.
During the press conference Monday afternoon at RCSD Headquarters, Lott told reporters that he failed on Friday and that no one wants to talk about suicide, but it does exist.
“Suicide is the number one cause of death in law enforcement and I failed on Friday,” Lott said. “It’s a sad day. It’s been a sad time since Friday. We will go on. We thank the community for their prayers.”
