A Richland County Sheriff’s Deputy will be laid to rest this afternoon. The funeral will be open to the public starting at 4pm at Bethlehem Baptist Church. According to a survey on National Suicides among police officers, they are not as uncommon as once thought.
In fact, according to a Badge of Life study, police officers taking their own lives is nothing new.
in 2008 Badge of Life started researching to find out how many suicides are actually happening in law enforcement across the U-S and the numbers are alarming.
The National surveillance of police suicide study reports more than 500 officers have committed suicide over the past 10 years. It also reports that an additional 37 percent has been added to their data to account for misreported, hidden and covered-up suicides.
