COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO)- Better efficiency options for workers and users around the state, that’s what a bipartisan group of members of the General Assembly lawmakers say they hope to achieve through their new energy caucus.

Lawmakers came to the statehouse Wednesday calling the recent layoff at V.C. Summer a failure.

“We have no plan to lower carbon energy going forward, the ratepayers of South Carolina. Us, our children and as it plans to be believed our grandchildren will be paying for the colossal mistakes we have made,” said Richland Republican Kirkman Finlay.

Now nearly 30 senators and representatives are working together to advocate for accountability and reformation of agencies that oversee energy rates like the Public Service Commission (PSC) and the Office of Regulatory Services (ORS).

“I’m looking at every thing. From the Puppet Service Commission, to Santee Cooper and it’s future ownership. I’m not entirely convinced that South Carolina needs to be in the business of power generation,” said Lexington Republican Micah Caskey.

Former workers like Bobby “Grizz” Harris say they want lawmakers standing behind them as they try to move forward.

“We hope the statehouse and everybody will give us support, gives us help, and make the right turn. Bring it back on line, if not both units, at least unit 2. It would be nice to put some folks back to work and not hurt the economy so much,” said the former Fluor site superintendent.
Lawmakers said more of their colleagues will join the group as they continue to seek answers about the future of energy in the state.
