Toddler dies from gunshot wound; Police Chief won’t say who did it

LANCASTER, S.C. (WOLO) –

Authorities say the mother of a 2-year-old child shot and killed is behind bars – along with her boyfriend.

The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office says 26-year-old Toni Gladden and her 18-year-old boyfriend Shazeem Hayes are charged with unlawful neglect towards a child.

Lancaster Police Chief Scott Grant refused to say who fired the shot that killed Jacarian Gladden in a Lancaster home Monday night.

Chief Grant says a night “full of “lies and avoidance” led to the charges against the mother and boyfriend.

Officials charged Gladden with lying to investigators as well. Authorities say the boy was shot once in the chest.
