Fireflies drop doubleheader to Augusta Saturday

AUGUSTA, GA (WOLO) – Augusta had the Fireflies number Saturday.

Columbia fell to the GreenJackets, 3-2, in the first affair and dropped the second, 8-0.

Franco collected his second three-hit game of the season in game one. Strom produced a double in each of the contests. The Massachusetts native has now hit safely in six consecutive games. This is his longest hitting streak of the season.

Franco’s third hit in game one cut Columbia’s (16-25, 56-53) deficit to just one run. Trailing Augusta (18-24, 41-66) by two in the sixth, the 25-year-old knocked in Vinny Siena. The Fireflies only trailed 3-2, but Patrick Ruotolo closed the door for the GreenJackets in the seventh. The righty registered his 12th save of the season.

Chase Ingram (L, 1-3) maneuvered through six innings on the mound for Columbia in the first contest. The Floridian issued four walks and gave up four hits. In the second game, Martin Anderson (L, 0-1) only lasted 3.1 innings in just his second start with the Fireflies. The southpaw allowed five earned runs and eight hits.

The visitors outhit Augusta 8-4 in the first game, but only managed three in the second collision. Columbia left a combined 16 runners on base in both affairs. Plus, on three separate occasions, the club stranded the bases loaded.

The Fireflies play their series finale against the Augusta GreenJackets on Sunday evening. First pitch is scheduled for 5:05 p.m. at Lake Olmstead Stadium. Righty Gabriel Llanes (5-9, 4.05) is scheduled to make the start for Columbia. Raffi Vizcaino (3-5, 5.73) is on the mound for Augusta.
