SC Files 100 Million Dollar Lawsuit Against U.S.
Columbia, SC (WOLO) — Tuesday morning the Attorney General’s office filed a 100 million dollar lawsuit against the Federal Government.
The AG’s Office says they want to recoup money they claim is owed to the State for 2016 and 2017 after they allege the US Department of Energy failed to remove one ton of plutonium dumped into the Savannah River.
Congress ordered the US Department of Energy to either remove the toxin or pay South Carolina 1 million dollars for each day it remained in the waterway.
In a complaint filed by Attorney General Alan Wilson he said quote ” the Federal Government can not renege on it’s obligation… and leave South Carolina as the permanent dumping ground for weapons grade plutonium.”
This is the first time a case of this magnitude has ever been filed by South Carolina against the U.S.
