Hickory shuts out Fireflies, 5-0 Thursday

COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO) – The Fireflies were shut out Thursday night, 5-0 by Hickory.

Thursday was Pink Night and the Fireflies wore special jerseys for breast cancer awareness. The jerseys were auctioned off to fans with proceeds going to the Palmetto Health Foundation Breast Center. The Fireflies raised an astounding $6,230 on Thursday.

Holderman (L, 1-3) allowed just one run over his first four innings of work. Leody Taveras walked with one out in the third. He scored two batters later when Alex Kowalczyk doubled.

Kowalczyk helped the visitors out to a 3-0 lead two frames later. First, Eric Jenkins singled and swiped second base. Blaine Prescott drove in his teammate with a base hit. It was Kowalczyk who later plated Prescott with a sharp single into the outfield. Cam Griffin relieved Holderman and Columbia’s (59-55) righty soon retired the side.

Griffin hurled a scoreless six and remained unblemished until Chuck LeBlanc strolled to the plate the next inning. His base hit scored Andretty Cordero who had reached earlier in the frame on an error.

Hickory (54-63) added one more score in the ninth to stretch its lead to 5-0. Crawdads reliever Christian Torres (W, 3-2) tossed six scoreless innings and allowed just one hit.

Columbia continues its series with Hickory on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. Right-hander Chase Ingram (1-3, 2.95) starts for the Fireflies and faces Crawdads righty A.J. Alexy (0-0, 2.25)
