First Lady of S.C. to Visit State Prison

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) – South Carolina First Lady Peggy McMaster will visit Camille Graham Correctional Institution in Columbia, Tuesday, to observe a program that encourages incarcerated mothers to bond with their children.

The S.C. Department of Corrections said “A Mother’s Voice” connects kids and their moms through reading. Mothers record themselves reading children’s books, and the tapes are sent to to their kids.

“A lot of people that have made some bad decisions end up in prison and they suffer, but their families suffer too, their children suffer,” said SCDC Director Bryan Stirling. “So one of the things we wanted to do was keep a connection.”

Stirling said that the average inmate in S.C. has a 10th grade education, so the program doesn’t just spur bonding – it also allows the women to improve their reading skills.

Camille Graham Correctional Institution is a Level II facility housing female inmates in Columbia.
