South Carolina Files Suit Against Maker of OxyContin

The South Carolina Attorney General's office filed a lawsuit against Purdue Pharma, the maker of the opioid OxyContin, Tuesday.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) – The South Carolina Attorney General’s office filed a lawsuit against Purdue Pharma, the maker of the opioid OxyContin, Tuesday.

In a news conference, Attorney General Allen Wilson said the company created a public nuisance by deceiving doctors and patients, and by not disclosing the potential long term consequences of using the drug.

Wilson said that it’s too early to assign a dollar amount to the lawsuit.

Republican Rep. Eric Bedingfield, of Greenville, spoke in support of the lawsuit.

“This is not a moral issue in our society; this a medical issue,” said Bedingfield. He lost his son after a long battle with opioid abuse.
