Former Clemson Tiger Gets Kids Ready for School

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) – A former Tiger is getting students ready for school, hosting an annual back-to-school bash this weekend.

As football season gears up, it is time for the rigorous practices and the rivalries. Robert Carswell is ready. The former Clemson Tiger spent four years as a free safety for the now defending national champions. During Carswell’s college career, he was known for being a leader on and off the field. He was a standout in community service and, in his senior year, set the Clemson record for most career tackles by a defensive back. Now, he is leading youth at The Meeting Place Church of Greater Columbia and getting them ready for school with the church’s annual back-to-school bash this weekend.

“I was blessed to play on the greatest college team in the country and develop skills that still help me today,” said Carswell. “And I understood the value of working hard in everything I do. To this day, that work ethic is still there.”

After graduating from Clemson in 2001, Carswell enjoyed two successful seasons in the NFL with the San Diego Chargers. While his football career is certainly something to celebrate, Carswell says it’s his passion to lead and guide children in the way they should go, that drives him and brings him joy.

“We all have a responsibility to mold and shape the next generation, because they are always watching everything we do,” said Carswell. “I take my job as Youth Director at The Meeting Place Church very seriously. I hope to inspire even one child to keep pushing toward their dreams like I did.”

Carswell has been helping to lead the youth at The Meeting Place Church of Greater Columbia under the leadership of Bishop Eric J. Freeman.

“Brother Carswell has an energy, an enthusiasm and most importantly, an everlasting love for the Lord which fuels everything he does,” said Bishop Freeman. “The way he interacts with the children and the way they feed off his energy is incredible. As this larger-than-life retired pro football player, he has this gift to relate to even the youngest children. You know he’s making a difference.”

Carswell conducted youth camps throughout the summer and will continue to mentor children with the church’s annual Back-to-School Bash on August 18-19.

Activities begin 7 p.m. on Friday, August 18 with a youth lock-in overnight at the church. Then the community events resume on campus on Saturday, August 19 from 9 a.m. to noon. There will be free school supplies, workshops for parents and plenty of activities for kids.

Media are invited to attend the Back-to-School events. There will be interview opportunities on Saturday with Robert Carswell, Bishop Freeman and other community leaders.

“I’m preparing kids for the game of life,” said Carswell. “Many of the skills used on the football field can also be used in the classroom. But it’s not about what sport you play, it’s about how you use your talents to become the best version of yourself.”
