SC AG Sues Major Drug Manufacturer

Columbia, SC (WOLO) — South Carolina is suing the manufacturer of one of the most prominent opioids on the market.Attorney General Alan Wilson made the announcement Tuesday.

Wilson says the maker of Oxycontin, Purdue Pharma created a public nuisance in our state by unfairly marketing Opioids to doctors who prescribe the medication.

The lawsuit claims Purdue downplayed the possible effects of the drug after the unfair trade act passed in 2007.

the attorney general says it is too early to disclose an exact dollar amount for the lawsuit but he says if the state wins the suit…a portion of that money would be donated to addiction programs and families dealing with opioid abuse.

A committee put together by House Speaker Jay Lucas back in April to fight opioid abuse plan to meet will meet Wednesday for a meeting in North Charleston.

The meeting is open to the public. And those in attendance are welcome to share their experiences, and testimonies.
