Midlands Residents Head For Texas to Help in Harvey Aftermath

COLUMBIA,SC (WOLO)- A group of Midlands residents are traveling to Texas in the morning to help rescue people trapped in flood waters.

“We lost a lot during our flood, we lost neighborhoods,” Volunteer, Joey Lemmon said. “They’ve lost towns and cities. They’ve lost ten times of what we have.”

Joey Lemmon is the owner of Hound dog 4×4, he recalled the time when Texans swooped in to help during one of the states most devastating floods.

“We were pretty much stuck on our land, we couldn’t get out and leave anywhere,” Lemmons said. “Everybody came in afterwards. There all of the crews were from Texas. So I felt like we need to go out and help anyway that we can.”

Lemmon along with a group of friends are headed to the lone star state.

“Five or six boats and trucks, and over 10 or 15 people going,” Lemmons said.

The group will be staying at a church in Texas that is just a few blocks away from flooded areas.

“I spoke with a deputy and he told us to come on and that they  need every kind of boat,” Lemmons said. “Anything they can move in the water, they need to get people out.”

The volunteers came pouring in once they heard about the trip

“I never would of thought we would’ve filled this truck as tight as we have,” Lemmons said.

The amount of support from the community shocked this local business owner

Within 24 hours this U-haul truck was filled with water bottles, diapers and other essential supplies.

“That’s what we’re all about,” Lemmons said. “We help each other. It doesn’t matter what color, what race, none of that matters with us. We’re here to help, and we’re going to do the best with what we’ve got.”
