UPDATE: Child, man succumb to injuries sustained in shooting

COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO) – A toddler and an adult male are dead after a shooting in a home on the 2400 block of Truax Lane Wednesday morning.

Columbia Police chief Skip Holbrook says it took officers only two minutes to respond to a report of shots fired and when they arrived they heard more gunshots.

“When they arrived, as they were arriving, they heard another shot coming from a residence. They entered the residence. They found a child had been struck, and an adult. Both the child and adult male were transported to a local hospital,” Chief Holbrook said.

Columbia Police say both the toddler and adult male passed away at a local hospital as a result of their injuries.

“As we follow protocol, in a serious incident like this where we have family members that have yet to be notified… we’re in the very early stages of the investigation. We’re conducting some interviews, pertinent interviews with people that were on scene when it occurred. We’re obviously talking to neighbors, anybody who might have seen or heard anything, we got medical people to interview, and we have family members to notify,” Chief Holbrook said.

It is still unclear as to the exact age of the toddler and who made the initial 911 call. Police say they know who was shot first but are not releasing that information just yet.

“Again, that’s something we may put out at a later time, but we’re not talking about that right now,” Chief Holbrook said.

No one is custody for the shooting, but police say the public does not need to be worried at this time.

“There’s no active threat, we feel like this is an isolated incident. And again, we’re treating this as an isolated incident. This being our crime scene,” Chief Holbrook said.

Columbia Police say they will release more information on the incident after the autopsies are performed Thursday morning.
