Palmetto Region of Red Cross Calls for Volunteers

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WOLO) – The Palmetto region of the American Red Cross said Thursday morning that it has shifted operations into high gear in anticipation of Hurricane Irma’s potential impact in South Carolina.

The organization said it’s establishing a statewide relief operation, and that hundreds of staff and volunteers are working closely with government officials and community partners to coordinate potential needs. As a plan is established, the Red Cross said that it will make additional requests for resources as necessary.

Red Cross said it’s staging supplies that can be immediately dispatched if shelters are opened.

“Our disaster workers have been busy over the last six days, planning every detail of our response,” said Louise Welch Williams, the regional Red Cross CEO. “We are getting resources into place now, so people have dry, safe place to stay should they need it.”

The organization needs volunteers. If you’re interested, please call 843-410-8467. You can also click here – be sure to select the Hurricane Irma application.
