COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO)- Local authorities said people posing as contractors often prey on residents when storms roll through the area.

“Every time there is a catastrophic event in South Carolina that involves mother nature, scam artists come out. And when I say come out, they come out in droves,” said Lieutenant Curtis Wilson of the Richland County Sheriff’s Department.

Experts said the posers often go door-to-door offering to work on affected homes for a fee.

“They want you to pay up front and then they’ll just leave without doing any of the work. So that’s one of your number one red flags, if someone is asking you to pay in full up front and they are soliciting door-to-door, that could be an indication that you should seek some service somewhere else,” said Juliana Harris of the state Department of Consumer Affairs.

Deputies said you can protect yourself from phonies by doing some homework before agreeing to a deal. “If anyone comes to your home unsolicited, make sure you get some references, do some checks. Also call the Better Business Bureau, or even the Department of Consumer Affairs. I’m sure if there are complaints against individuals like this, you’ll be able to look them up and find out,” said Wilson.

Experts also said you should never pay with cash. They suggest you use credit or ac cut a check, that way you will leave a paper trail.
