EDISTO BEACH, S.C. (WOLO) – South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster heads to the coast Thursday to assess the damage Edisto Beach sustained during Hurricane Irma.

The governor will be joined by Mayor Jane S. Darby at the Edisto Beach State Park Welcome Center.

S.C. State Parks reported that the oceanfront and live oak campgrounds at Edisto Beach State Park were badly damaged and are closed through the end of the year. Officials said camping reservations will be refunded. Reservations for affected cabins will also be refunded.

The day-use area on the beach and cabin area will reopen September 22 after clean up.

McMaster ordered the evacuation of barrier islands in Southern S.C. because of the storm. That evacuation order was lifted Tuesday. The biggest place evacuated was Hilton Head Island, with 42,000 people. The populations of the other islands ranged from several hundred to a few dozen.

Irma brought several feet of storm surge over the islands Monday.
