COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) – The Columbia Police Department is welcoming a new K-9 to its team – an 18-month old chocolate Labrador named Rusty.

A department spokeswoman said Rusty has been training with his assigned handler for several weeks, getting ready for their new assignments.

The team is part of the Organized Crime and Narcotics Unit. Rusty is originally from Georgia. The addition of rusty brings the K-9 unit up to 13 dogs.

A member of the k-9 team described rusty as jovial, young at heart, and very energetic, but says he works very hard and will be a great addition to the team.

They’re hoping that his cute face will also help build relations with the community.
