COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO) – State offices closed Thursday (5/10) in observance of Confederate Memorial Day.

South Carolina is one of six states that recognizes the holiday, though the dates vary.

May 10 is significant because it is the day Confederate General Stonewall Jackson died and the day Union soldiers captured Confederate President Jefferson Davis.
